It is rare to find a director of a Bible film that has read the Gospels -and even rarer for one to be Christian!
You'll have to see here on this Coins of the Bible website -close-ups of the ancient Bible coins that Jesus and the disciples would have used in daily life.
“Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”
Jesus specifically asked for a denarius -which was a dime-sized Roman coin that was worth a day’s wage. The silver coin would have an image and inscription of Caesar (likely Tiberius as he was the current ruler (AD14-37). This coin is commonly called the Tribute Penny. We know what these coins are from the Bible and from history. They are available and most are affordable -likely costing less than an imitation prop that is incorrect.
More than just evading a hostile question...
Jesus not only answered, but showed the hypocrisy of the religious leaders trying to trap Him. They did not care about offending God for they could easily show Jesus a pagan idolatrous coin in their possession. It was their love of money and having to pay the Poll or head tax that bothered them!
Just as the Roman coin belonged to Caesar since his image was on it -so do we belong to God as we are "made in His image." (Genesis 1:27)
TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS

PONTIF MAXIM

Who hasn’t wanted to know more about the Egyptians or the Romans or events in the Bible?
As a child in Sunday school, I longed for someone to bridge the gap between Bible times and today.
How tall was Goliath? What did the stones look that David used in his sling?
It was simple questions like these that sparked a curiosity that longed to be filled.
History becomes a lot more exciting when one sees or touches a coin or artifact from the past. My passion began when a high school teacher passed around a 2,200 year old Greek coin from the local museum. It was a good choice as the chunky coin is the most recognized and well-loved ancient coin with Athena's face on the obverse and a cute owl framed by squished up silver on the reverse. The unique miniature work of art had great eye appeal. Who handled the coin and what did it buy?
It wasn't until after I finished university that I came across a book titled: “Coins of Bible Days.”
I was surprised to learn that not only did we know what these coins looked like. . . but that they were available and affordable.
In a heartbeat I sold my modern coin collection and sought out Bible coins. How much more exciting was a coin that no one else had -since each was handmade! More important, each coin had a story. . .
With the world at our fingertips, believers have a responsibility for making the Bible as real and exciting as it is! We have been entrusted with a message that has withstood the test of time and has changed our lives. If we can make the Bible real to someone . . .why not?
