The Ben-Hur chariot scene was one of the most famous movie scenes of all time, filmed in the days when these live action scenes were very dangerous. It took 5 weeks over a period of 3 months to film the 9 minute scene -requiring more than 200 miles of racing to complete. The horses were mainly Lipizzan -and though Heston was an experienced horseman, it took daily three-hour lessons in chariot driving to become skilled -which he learned quickly. It took over a year for 1,000 workman to carve an oval track out of a rock quarry and 40,000 tons of sand to cover it, creating the largest film set ever built at that time, costing a million dollars. Heston had to wear special contact lenses to prevent eye damage from the grit that was kicked up.
Heston particularly enjoyed biblical epics as he appreciated the "historical aspects of the Christian faith."

Director William Wyler set out to outdo Cecil B. DeMille in making a biblical epic.
He later joked that “it took a Jew to make a good film about Christ.”
Even MGM’s roaring lion was silenced during the opening credits as Wyler wanted to be sensitive to the following Nativity scene of the birth of Jesus.
The initial $7 million budget ballooned to more than double -making it the costliest film at the time. Yet it was the second highest-grossing film in history at the time winning a record 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Wyler), Best Actor in a Leading Role (Heston).
Shooting lasted 12-14 hours/day and six days/week. There were 10,000 extras requiring 100,000 costumes, along with over 200 camels and 2,500 horses.
Urban legends regarding the chariot sequence.
1. A stuntman died during filming (one was injured).
2. A red Ferrari can be seen during the chariot race.
3. Heston wore a wristwatch during the chariot race (he wore leather bracers up to the elbow).
